– it’s not us, it’s them out there!

A cry we hear when confronting people with the truth that the human population has exploded, way beyond viable capacity and that we should ALL stop having children

Blaming people in other countries is not accepting responsibility for the mess we are in. It does not matter what country you are in, it is the global population that needs to be drastically reduced. There is also the important point that people living in poverty, with few resources and most of those other peoples cast-offs, are actually consuming a tiny fraction of what we in the “western world” consume every day.

If we are the intelligent species that we like to think we are, then we must think globally and not be petty minded, believing we can carry on as we are, reproducing in ever greater numbers.

No one has the “right” to have children. It is a want, that is indoctrinated into us from our own childhoods. Social pressure, lack of opportunities, media pressure, government support, all push us into believing that parenthood is such a great thing.

Bringing another life into the world is really one of the most selfish of things you could do. Who do you think should die, to make room for your offspring? Because it could come to that. World human food supplies are a delicately balanced commodity. If crops fail one year, which is more and more likely with the increasing climate changes, then there simply will not be enough food to go round. We already see people starving and dying from lack of food from all sorts of causes – famine, food supplies cut off, war, poverty.

It is NOT advocating eugenics to say this, but trying to take action now, before the population problem gets even worse. Not creating a life is very different from taking a life.

So please, do not blame “them out there.” This is everyone’s problem. Blaming those in other countries is irresponsible. And by “other countries,” do they mean outside Europe? Outside the UK? Or even outside England, or Scotland, or Wales or Northern Ireland? Let’s bring it a bit closer, what about those outside your region of the country, your town, your neighbourhood, perhaps even your street? It all sounds incredibly racist.

The simple matter is that there are too many of us and we consume far, far more resources than any other species, giving nothing back. Accept it is everyone’s problem and be child free, or at least do not have any more.

  1. Hi Phil – and your anonymous poster of the 2nd-I’d emphasise that I agree overpopulation is the root of current problems. But dropping off the edge of a cliff isn’t going to be a realistic solution. In fact since the world population with only 1 child per couple would halve every generation,  say 25years, then by 2100 the population would be back to 1800 levels, 1bn,  and at considerably less social upheavals.  For instance,  how could a vastly reduced younger population look after the older population? Or doesn’t that matter,  don’t the aged deserve to be looked after in your eyes ? Never mind what would be going on in 25 – 40yrs time with no children having been born at all. What endpoint do you see, population wise, to your proposal – how long should it run for -10, 20yrs ? Even with only 1 child per couple,  in 125 years – a blink of an eye in earth time – worldwide population would be at levels last seen in 1000AD (and racism plays no part of a mathematical argument)Ranting is fine but I don’t read any practically acceptable solution being proposed. Life is a balancing act.Lastly I’d say that most parents would not agree that having children has been a selfish act, given their investment of time and labour in offspring, and denial of their personal luxuries and pursuits. The opposite more like. All the best Andrew  Sent from AOL on Android

    1. What can I say Andrew? Once again you are only considering people, the rich few too. Our eco-system, that unique synthesis of all the other species, which allow us to live, is being destroyed solely by us through spending money and having children.
Whether older people (of which I am one) will have enough carers in the future is a common argument against childfree, yet only the very rich can afford it now so we won’t be missing anything. Plus it is even more irrelevant when the time comes when there is no more air left for them to breath, food and water to nourish. A reality which we will probably witness in our lifetimes.
