If you haven’t realised yet, our national public library service is under threat of extinction. Branches are being closed faster now than at any other time in history, despite a hell of a lot more people wanting to use them. Greedy local politicians, who would rather see taxation channelled to their business friends than provide essential services, are finding it all too easy to close branches by claiming the internet is a better substitute. This of course is totally crazy, not everyone has internet access or even uses a computer. But more importantly, libraries provide a role the internet can never adopt, offering a safe warm place where those who feel lonely or afraid can come and feel welcome, be socially interactive.
The first cuts made are on the budget for buying books. Recently I have been getting in touch with every library in the country (there were over 3,500 but now it is far less) and the overwhelming majority are telling me they haven’t been able to purchase new stock for some time.
So this is where you can help. Buy a copy of Maureen’s book today and donate it to your local branch. I just did that for Micklefield Community Library in High Wycombe. Even just one book can make a big difference.
To order a copy (which can be sent direct to any library) simply click on this link.
